The lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP) battery is the safest of the regular lithium iron battery types. The nominal voltage of an LFP cell is 3.2 V (lead-acid: 2 V/cell). A 12.8 V LFP battery therefore consists of 4 cells connected in series.

Robust
An LFP battery does not need to be fully charged. In fact, the service life increases slightly if the battery is only partially charged instead of fully charged. This is a significant advantage of LFP batteries compared to lead-acid batteries. Other advantages include the wide operating temperature range, excellent cyclisation, low internal resistance and high efficiency.

Efficient
The degree of energy utilisation can be of decisive importance for numerous applications. The round-trip energy efficiency (discharge from 100 % to 0 % and charge back to 100 %) of an average lead-acid battery is 80 %. The round-trip energy efficiency of an LFP battery is 92%. The charging process of a lead-acid battery becomes particularly inefficient when the 80 % state of charge mark is reached. This leads to energy utilisation rates of only 50 %. This value is even lower for solar systems, as energy reserves are required for several days (the battery is in operation at a state of charge of between 70 % and 100 %). An LFP battery, on the other hand, still achieves an energy utilisation rate of 90 %, even if it is in a shallow state of discharge.

Expensive?
LFP batteries are expensive compared to lead-acid batteries. However, the higher purchase costs will more than pay for themselves in demanding applications due to the longer service life, high reliability and excellent energy utilisation rate.

Bluetooth
Cell voltages, temperature and alarm status can be monitored via Bluetooth. This is very useful for recognising a (potential) problem such as a cell imbalance.
